Just weeks after Opium shut its South Beach doors and moved to the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino complex near Hollywood, the guys behind the hugely successful megaclub crobar/Cameo are opening a joint at Fort Lauderdale beach. So, is SoBe style migrating north?

Not necessarily. Exit 66, which has its grand opening Wednesday night, is about as far from glam and velvet rope exclusion as one can get. The club aims to take trucker chic to the next level, billing itself as “a fusion of American life with a dose of ’60s kitsch, wrapped up in the sex appeal of the eternal mud flap vixen.”

Cal Fortis, who designed the laid-back America’s Backyard parties at Revolution in Fort Lauderdale, says he was going for a similar vibe, but with a twist. “Instead of backyard Americana, it’s the back roads of America, which are much darker and a little dirtier and sexy. So that idea developed into a fictional character named Billy and his journey along Route 66 and all of his roadside experiences. Call it Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas meets Road Trip.”

Exit 66 features five whimsically themed rooms: Woody’s Bar and Pleasure Liner Lounge (a rock ‘n’ roll bar), Cool Pool (inspired by Paul Newman’s 1963 billiards film, The Hustler), Madame B. Atch’s Bunny Ranch (a burlesque saloon), Chiki-Tiki (a surreal Gilligan’s Island) and the main room, Exit 66, with Billy’s Bar (inspired by the ’60s biker flick Easy Rider).

Fortis says that although Exit 66 intentionally departs from SoBe style, it’s no drop in quality. ”This is the level of a world-class nightclub,” he says. “It has the bones of what we’ve done with crobar in Miami, New York and Chicago, just in a more theatrical, economy-driven way.”

That means instead of having to spend $500 on VIP bottle service, Exit 66 will offer ”30 Pabst Blue Ribbon longnecks in a champagne bucket,” says Fortis. The club will be overflowing with tongue-in-cheek attitude.

The time has come. We have waited for a really long time for this. The boys are back with an earth shattering album, Invaders Must Die (grab it on iTunes), that topped the UK charts in its first week as well as entering the Billboard Euro charts from #1. It’s so exciting to see live electronic music alive and well. ‘Crobar, The making of a mega club’ follows the planning, construction and gala opening of New York’s hot, new megaclub. Part ‘Trading Spaces’ and ‘Studio 54, ‘ the video will feature interviews with nightclub designer Callin Fortis and Kenny Smith, co-owners of Crobar. Directed by Bill Marpet and produced by Cherie Fortis and Vicky Bugbee, the 70 plus hours of footage will be edited at B Productions into a feature length documentary and series. An amazing behind the scenes peek into the award winning nightclub design of Bigtime Design Studios.

Greenhouse NYC

Greenhouse is a new club in NYC that opened last month at 150 Varick Street in Manhattan’s hip SoHo district. Greenhouse NYC hosts many green features and raised the bar for the nightlife industry by achieving LEED registration and transforming the entire space into a lush green oasis.

The bi-level, 6,000-square-foot space is the first nightclub in New York to with LEED certification, the official stamp of approval from the US Green Building Council. That means that everything from building materials and garbage disposal, energy and water usage, has to be regulated and reduced. The walls are made of sustainable bamboo rather then wood and LED light bulbs are used which use one-thirtieth of the energy of regular incandescent bulbs. Uniforms are sustainably made in Africa by Edun, a clothing company owned by eco-warrior Bono and his wife, Ali Hewson. Electricity for the sound system and the rest of the club is said to be 100 percent wind-powered. The use of waterless urinals and low-flow toilets will make for a big reduction in water use, at least 15,000 gallons saved annually. The featured spirit is organic Vodka 360 which is made in a green distillery and served in a reusable, recycled bottle.

Antonio Di Oronzo of Bluarch Architecture and Interiors of New York City was responsible for the design of the space.

iBar

iBar is a system for the interactive design of any bar-counter. Integrated video-projectors can project any content on the milky bar-surface. The intelligent tracking system of iBar detects all objects touching the surface.

This input is used to let the projected content interact dynamically with the movements on the counter. Objects can be illuminated at their position or virtual objects can be “touched” with the fingers. The iBar system is ready to be installed completely into any kind of bar-counter, there’s no need for any further installations on the ceiling or something like that. The software is flexible and can be adjusted and enhanced.

Sustainable Dance Club

If you felt that the atmosphere in the new, hip Club Watt was somehow electric, you would be right: Watt has a new type of dance floor that harvests the energy generated by jumps and gyrations and transforms it into electricity. It is one of a handful of energy-generating floors in the world, most still experimental.

With its human engineering, Watt partly powers itself: The better the music, the more people dance, the more electricity comes out of the floor. At Watt, which describes itself as the first sustainable dance club, that electricity is used to power the light show in and around the floor. “For this first club, we thought it was useful for people to see the results,” said Michel Smit, an adviser on the project. “But if the next owner wants to use the electricity to power his toaster, it can do that just as well.”

Watt is in large part the creation of the Sustainable Dance Club, a quirky company formed last year by a group of Dutch ecological inventors, engineers and investors now headed by Smit. More than a year in the making, Watt is a huge performance space with not just the sustainable dance floor, but also rainwater-fed toilets and low-waste bars. (Everything is recycled.) Its heat is harvested in part from the bands’ amplifiers and other musical equipment. “Our idea is that there’s enough energy in this world, you just have to use it the right way,” Smit said. “If you have a full dance club, there’s lots there, you just have to turn it into a usable product.”
