What a great time of good music in New York City these days. Following the wonderful Kissy Sell Out show on Saturday and Royksopp at Webster Hall on Monday night, coming up is BURNS along with Deadmau5 and Kim Fai at Terminal 5 on 11/27 Wednesday night.

BURNS has a very catchy electro sound. Now a regular fixture on the Hype Machine chart, BURNS has been called up for remix duties by Kasabian, Empire of the Sun, Late of The Pier, Passion Pit, Filthy Dukes, Yuksek, Melanie Fiona, Gossip and Calvin Harris (who even named a song after Burns on his forthcoming #1 UK album).

When asked in a recent interview for Paper Magazine who is “Burns Night?”, Calvin Harris replied “Burns is a DJ. He’s touring the US with Deadmau5. Burns is better than both of us put together. The song is basically just a dedication to him, the chaos that he brings. If you ever meet him, you’ll know what I mean”

Check out his Teknique EP below and see you at Terminal 5 tomorrow night!

Large scale painting installation using thermochromic ink which allow the work to be perceived as monochrome or image depending on the temperature of the room and the proximity of the viewer.

FRANCINE LECLERCQ

3:2

September 29 – October 24, 2009

SOHO2O CHELSEA GALLERY
511 West 25th Street, Suite 605
New York, NY 10001

The work consists of painted cells measuring 3 x 2 inches; 3:2 is the aspect ratio in photography now adopted for the LCD screens of digital devices such as the cameras, cell phones and the likes. They will fill the walls of Gallery II.

The clear association is to our bombastic ability to fix and register images on the fly with the aid of these devices, the new format of our perception. In concert halls, press conferences, in streets and parks, in more or lesser degrees the scenario evokes the image of a vaporized display of memories scattered about like gas particles in suspense, fully liberated from the captivity of their once fleshy bunker, the body. The half apocalyptic half ephemeral scene where knowledge is thus remotely held, in a (yet) senseless, un-felt state seems to carry with it the potential nearing of the death of sensation. Hence the gallery’s classic role as a match making box between the subject and the object, the see-er and the see-ee, is employed to facilitate a tête-à-tête with this contemporary condition and restore, however temporarily an atmosphere of sensation or the sensible.

In this respect anything other than direct exchange between the work and the viewer would render the situation picturesque. Painting, the medium by which this operation is motivated would need to be charged, sensitized. A coat of thermochromic ink is applied to cells each bearing an image, causing a nuance such that they may be perceived as an opaque monochrome, a blur or transparent where the underlying image is fully visible depending on temperature and location, the proximity of bodies and heat exchange.

It is an experiment whereby art is the moment of a mutual dependency fermented by an active participation of the senses. (Ali Soltani, 2009, extract )

Wax Tailor’s first tour in the United States saw him opening for RJD2 and now he is coming back, headling his own tour bringing his signature sound of perfectly blended Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, Jazz and 60s Pop to the States. His style is immediately identifiable, but his new album “In The Mood For Life” establishes a true evolution both in terms of production and song writing. String instruments, which were once just extras, now assume a more prominent role, and where genres once crossed path from one track to another, they now collide within a song. You can witness this denser, more organic sound in-person when he brings his live show consisting of Wax Tailor, two live vocalists, a cellist, and a flautist to NYC on Oct. 2nd.

Spain’s music, video and film festival Sonar is organizing a day of special concerts and performances in New York in a very unusual venue in the city, the Baryshnikov Arts Center (BAC), with a top class line-up that combines multimedia art ideas with experimental electronica and latest generation pop, and which includes both Catalan and American artists.

Sonar’s arrival in New York is thanks to a collaboration with the Institut Ramon Llull, as part of the events entitled “Catalan Days: Music and Media from Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.

The SonarSound NY bill includes installations by Marcel·lí Antúnez and ReacTable, featuring Ikue Mori; the mysterious ambient of Balago; the soundtrack, performed live, by Árbol and Fibla for a film by Taiwan’s Tsai Ming-Liang; the extravagant pop of Hidrogenesse; hip-hop in a trio format with the Del Palo Soundsystem; two sets by the Barcelona dj d.a.r.y.l.; the highly unconventional rhythm of the Americans (both ex-residents of Barcelona) DJ/Rupture and Prefuse 73; and visuals by No-Domain.

SonarSound NY - Tuesday, 12th May

All performances are free

Italian couturiers Bottega Veneta have this month embarked on their most momentous collaborative project to date. For the next five weeks New York retail stalwart, Bergdorf Goodman, will play host to the first ever Bottega Veneta invasion.

Supplementing Veneta’s main floor fashion and accessory concessions, Creative Director Tomas Maier has produced a full 7th floor retail take over. Regular residence of the homes department, the entirety of Veneta’s Living collection has been artfully littered around the space. Read more…
