Architectural Bliss in Manhattan

56 Leonard Street by Herzog & de Meuron

Having designed buildings in many forms from schools and houses to the Beijing National Stadium, the Swiss architects, Herzog & de Meuron are now attempting to stamp their architectural footprints in New York City with their 57-story luxury residential tower in the heart of Manhattan’s busy Tribeca 56 Leonard Street.

The tower will house 145 residences, each with its own unique floor plan and private outdoor space, in a veritable cascade of individual homes that the architects describe as “houses stacked in the sky” blending indoors and outdoors seamlessly together. With its articulated surfaces, dramatic cantilevers, profiled slab edges, profusion of balconies, expanses of glass, and views from downtown Manhattan to as far as the Atlantic Ocean. The residences range in size from 1,430 sq ft for the two-bedroom apartments to 6,380 sq ft for the penthouses, priced between US$3.5 million and US$33 million. Construction of the tower has begun, and the project is slated for completion in 2010.
