Cocos Island, Costa Rica: Diving With Sharks

Diving With Sharks

Cocos Island National Park is located 300 miles southwest of the coast of Costa Rica in the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean, may be one of the world’s last undiscovered hideaways. It is considered the World Best Scuba Diving Paradise and admired by scuba divers for its populations of hammerhead sharks, giant manta rays, brilliantly coloured fish and coral reefs, dolphins and other large marine species. There is always the chance of swimming with an enormous whale shark as well. Cocos is probably the best place in the world to go diving with sharks.

Diving With Sharks

The island was formed during a volcanic upheaval about two-and-a-half million years ago and is composed of basaltic rock, labacorite and andecite lava flows. It is the only island in the tropical eastern Pacific with a tropical rainforest and the fish population has been allowed to grow in harmony with the natural balance of the food chain, which is why such a great diversity and quantity of sea life is prevalent.

Unlike its more famous neighbours to the South, The Galapagas Islands, it is accessible only by boat and there are no place to stay on the island. As tourists are allowed ashore only with permission of island rangers, there are very limited ways to be able to step foot on the island but one of the best ways to experience this natural beauty is through a dive trip.

Just sign up for a trip and make sure you are in San Jose, Costa Rica the day before boat’s departure. For more information visit underseahunter.com
